Surrogacy: Science of happiness

Infertility is a quite disappointing and frustrating for couples looking to take the next step in life with a lot of hopes and dreams. Although they occur due to a variety of reasons, infertility characterised by frequent miscarriages may be due to the incapability of the reproductive system to carry a baby successfully throughout the pregnancy.

Surrogacy is a plausible solution to address this issue and to fulfill the dreams of the couple to have a baby of their own. The treatment option of surrogacy requires a sound understanding of the medical and legal procedures associated with it before taking the critical decision.

Surrogacy is often clouded by a dose of stigma associated with having another person carrying one’s baby. News of various legal battles that it has witnessed often contributes to the general reluctance people feel for it. However when done in a reputed clinic, it is one of the best treatment options for those unable to conceive, to have a baby of their own.

Procedures involved in surrogacy

The treatment of surrogacy involves selection of surrogates to suit the requirements of the patients and educating them regarding all the procedures associated with it. The treatment is done within a tight legal framework for the benefit of the couple as well as the surrogate.

The medical side of the procedure involves artificial fertilisation from extracted or donated eggs and sperms (depending on the type of surrogacy opted for) and implanting the embryo in the womb of the surrogate. Agreements are made for the transfer of the baby within a specified time of birth.

Take A New Step To Start Your Family With ART

From a procedure called test tube baby introduced more than two decades back, Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART), have seen a vast growth in its scope as well as functionality. What was earlier a technique involving the basic techniques of IVF has grown to accommodate various other procedures to address various conditions of infertility with success.

Now, ART involves several procedures customised to mediate the deficiencies in the parents. Along with IVF, other ART techniques involve ICSI, IUI and so on. Surrogacy and fertilisation with donor eggs are also done with artificial reproduction technique.

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation have grown with technological advancements, resulting in an increased success rate and increased number of live births. The different stages in IVF include ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilisation, embryo culture followed by embryo transfer or cryopreservation. In women with at least one functioning fallopian tube, techniques like GIFT or ZIFT can be performed.

ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is performed the quality of sperm is poor. It involves directly injecting the sperm into the egg in a laboratory. This procedure is mostly done as a part of IVF procedure. The procedure is adept at combatting male infertility.

IUI or Intra Uterine Insemination is one of the least complex methods of artificial reproduction technique. It involves the direct placement of sperm into the cervix or uterus of the women using artificial procedure. IUI is performed in cases where sperm is unable to survive within the woman’s body.

Surrogacy is a type of artificial reproduction technique, where egg and sperm collected from the intended parents are fertilised and implanted in another woman’s (surrogate) uterus. The procedure is done on the agreement that the custody of baby will transferred to the biological parents, once it is born. This method is relied in cases when a woman’s uterus is not equipped to carry a child for 9 months.

Donor eggs

When a woman is not able to conceive with her own eggs, an egg donor service must be relied upon. The donor egg is fertilised with sperm and implanted in uterus for a successful result.
ARC International Fertility and Research Centre, offers advanced treatments for infertility including ART procedures like ICSI, IUI and IVF with a high success rate and at affordable cost.

Male Infertility is a widespread condition today. The lifestyle and environmental factors of today has contributed largely to its increase. Male infertility has not as recognised as female infertility mainly because of the inclinations of our society and the stigma associated with it. Nevertheless, it is an altogether stressful disorder.

Characterised by the inability to impregnate after regular and unprotected intercourse of a year or beyond, male infertility can be caused due to a variety of factors. The symptoms of male infertility apart from the obvious sign of an absent fatherhood, are not usually recognised.

Common symptoms of male infertility include decreased body and facial hair growth, pain, lump or swelling in testicles, irregularities in ejection or ejaculation and sexual dysfunction. In some cases, inability to detect smells are also found.

Male infertility can be caused due to several factors as mentioned below.

Lifestyle change – the changes in life style such as food patterns, job nature, lack of physical activity, obesity and stress are known to have increased the incidence of male infertility, considerably.

Blockages – blockages in the tubes carrying sperm from the testes to penis or during ejaculation can lead to infertility problems.

Varicocele – varicocele is the major cause of infertility among men today. This is caused when the veins swell which causes a disruption in sperm movement, leading to infertility.

Abnormal sperm – unhealthy sperm which lacks mobility is a result of hormonal imbalance of chromosomal defect. This causes infertility as well.

Hormonal imbalance – lack of hormones or an excess can hamper production of sperm and hence decrease sperm count, leading to infertility.

Treatment for Male Infertility

Male infertility treatment involves medications, surgeries or hormonal therapy based on the cause. Once the cause is diagnosed, appropriate treatment pattern is decided. In unexplained cases of infertility, assisted reproductive techniques like ICSI, IVF and so on are used.

It is very hard to find if you have an Infertility Problem without the help of a medical practitioner. Visiting a specialist doctor is essential to confirm whether you have an infertility problem or not.

Infertility refers to an inability to conceive after having regular sexual intercouse due to reasons that may vary from the inability to transfer gametes to the inability to accept the incoming gamete for fusion to reasons that even medical science fails to explain. Around 30% of the infertility issues are found in females while an equal proportion is also reported in males. In the rest of the cases, medical science still remains perplexed as to what the real reason is.
Infertility may stem from many reasons like inability to produce gametes, improper functioning of the reproductive organs, body temperature of the individuals, improper copulation and so on. This defect may have been persistent in the individual since birth or might have been started later due to lifestyle changes or physiological changes in the individual’s body.

It is always advisable that couple tries to mate in the proper time with respect to the menstrual cycle of the female. Even if pregnancy does not happen after one such try, give a few more tries. Still, if there are no results then visiting fertility specialist would be beneficial.

Motherhoood Made Possible Through IVF

Immediate medical intervention is a must for all childless couples who wish to welcome their baby but are not successful due to various reasons. Assisted Reproductive Technology, commonly known as ART, helps these couples start their own family. The most common type of ART is In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

Who should opt for IVF?

Women with gynaecological disorders that include chronic form of occurrences such as endometriosis, tumors, inflammatory processes, etc, frequent miscarriages, weak immune system, hormonal imbalance, lack of ovulation, and infantile genitalia can try IVF treatment.

In some cases, the reason why the couple cannot conceive even after trying could also be the male partner when the man has less or no sperm to fertilise the egg. The sperm fails to reach the egg to fertilise it. The sperm could be deformed or its shape may be irregular preventing from fertilising the egg. Hence, the quality and the quantity of the sperm matters during reproduction. In such cases, these men can opt for IVF treatment.

IVF Procedure

As per this procedure, a couple's sperms and eggs are collected in a Petri dish or a glass dish (which is called 'in vitro' in Latin). The entire process is non-surgical and painless. The sperm fertilises the egg under the supervision of an embryologist. The couple is then asked to visit again after three to five days. Meanwhile, the embryo undergoes fertilisation and becomes a zygote. This zygote is placed into the uterus through the cervix with the hope of a successful pregnancy.

Each and every stage of this treatment is closely monitored with precision. The Stages of IVF Treatment are:
  • Ovarian Hyper Stimulation: In this stage, fertility medications are injected in the body through different protocols for the sole purpose of stimulating the development of multiple follicles of the ovaries, thus increasing chances of pregnancy.
  • Egg Retrieval: This stage involves injecting HCG just before the follicles split. The egg is then recovered for the procedure only when they have been fully matured.
  • Readying the Egg and Sperm: Sperm washing has to be done in order to remove inactive cells and seminal fluid. This sperm is then ready to fertilise the  best quality eggs with oocyte selection for optimal chances of a successful healthy pregnancy.
  • Embryo Culture: In the blastocyst stage, the culture of embryos is performed either artificially or using the female's own uterine lining.
  • Embryo Selection: In this stage, the morphological scoring system is used to pick the highest scoring Embryo for optimum pregnancy rate.
  • Embryo Transfer: The final stage of the IVF procedure is the transferring of the best embryo based on the number of cells it contains, to the uterus.

The whole IVF process may sound simple but, if not done in a quality medical center, it can lead to several complications in the later stages of pregnancy.
